Kralendijk- The roundabout in Hato, just in front of the Trans World Radio studio, has received a second facelift in the form of some serious landscaping. The latest efforts to beautify the roundabout have made the whole area much more attractive than ever before.
The beautification project, initiated by the Fundashon Boneiru Bunita, does not only entail landscaping, but also the construction of various underwater sculptures made out of recycled metal. The sculptures are the work of welder/artist Sculptor Mark Ansier.
According to Debby Rauwers and husband Marco Vermeulen, 2 driving forces behind the project, Ansier is slated to visit the island again in June of this year to further finalize work on the sculptures. The project has known some setbacks. Some people felt that the sculptures initially were hardly visible, although this has been much improved with the new landscaping.
Also, at least one car drove over the roundabout, damaging the sculptures after they had been recently erected.
The new look is a huge improvement compared to the unkempt and ugly look the roundabout had prior to the start of the project. Not only is the roundabout located at one of the busiest intersections on the island on the way to various leading hotels, but nearly all buses carrying the many cruise ship passengers who visit our island also pass the roundabout on the way to the North Side of the island.
