Flamingo Airport Bonaire Nears Completion of Runway Lighting Upgrades
KRALENDIJK – The replacement of the runway and platform lighting (AGL) at Flamingo Airport has entered its final phase. So far, nearly 100 kilometres of cables and ducts have been replaced, all lamps and fixtures on the runway have been updated, and work has now started on the lighting for taxiways and platforms.
Next month, the Precision Approach Path Indicators (PAPI), a critical system for pilot landings, will also be replaced. A specialized team will calibrate and adjust this lighting system from an aircraft.
Meanwhile, the new AGL substation is being further outfitted, including the installation of an emergency generator and fuel storage for reliable power supply. Control panels are being installed at four locations, including the air traffic control tower, to manage and monitor the lighting system.
In collaboration with partners such as the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management, Rijkswaterstaat, and the Public Entity Bonaire (OLB), the BIA team is working diligently to complete the project, which is expected to be fully operational by the second quarter of this year.
