Knops to PLP: ‘No More Autonomy for Statia than Law Allows’

Oranjestad, St. Eustatius- State Secretary Raymond Knops is not in agreement with the Progressive Labour Party’s wish for more autonomy for St. Eustatius.

This is written in a letter to members of Dutch Parliament, in which Knops looking back to his visit to the island on November 3 and 4, 2020.

Knops writes in his letter that, together with Government Commissioner Marnix van Rij, he had a meeting with Island Council members for the Progressive Labour Party, Rechelline Leerdam, Reuben Merkman and Clyde van Putten.

According to Knops, during the meeting the PLP stressed that the Party wants to work together with Holland on the ‘Wet Herstel Voorzieningen Sint Eustatius’ to fully reestablish Democracy on the island.


“The PLP explained their plea for more autonomy. I made it clear that there cannot be more autonomy than the law allows”, according to Knops in his letter.

Apart from the PLP, Knops also spoke to Adelka Spanner from the DP and independent Councilman Koos Sneek from the List Sneek.
