New Protection Code Aims to Address Domestic Violence
KRALENDIJK – As of January 1, 2025, the Domestic Violence and Child Abuse Protection Code (HGKM) has been implemented in the Caribbean Netherlands. This code is designed to help both professionals and citizens recognize and address domestic violence and child abuse.
The code provides clear guidelines for professionals, such as teachers and healthcare workers, to take safe and appropriate steps when they suspect violence. They can always consult the Domestic Violence and Child Abuse Advice and Reporting Center (AMHK).
Citizens can also turn to local advisory centers for assistance in identifying violence or abuse. On Bonaire, the advisory center is Guiami (Sentro Akseso). On St. Eustatius, it is part of the Social Support Units of OLE, and on Saba, it is part of the OLS, where help and advice are available.
The Protection Code strengthens regional cooperation to foster a safe and caring community.
