Restoring Statia’s Historic Cannons: Preserving a Storied Legacy
ORANJESTAD- Statia’s impressive collection of around 300 historic cannons, relics of its time as a Caribbean trade hub, is being restored thanks to efforts by Matthé Nat and Heritage Inspector Raimie Richardson. The project aims to bring these artifacts back to life and place them at key historical locations across the island.
The restoration process involves meticulous conservation techniques to address the wear caused by centuries of exposure. Once restored, the cannons will be remounted and displayed, offering both locals and visitors a tangible connection to Statia’s rich history.
Safeguarding heritage
This effort reflects the passion and dedication of the team working to preserve Statia’s cultural legacy. By restoring and showcasing these cannons, they are not only safeguarding the island’s heritage, but also celebrating its significance in Caribbean history.
