The Bottom, Saba- Saba Government would like to see lower electricity prices for consumers.

The cost of electricity for consumers is one of the topics which, last week, was brought up by Commissioner Bruce Zagers in meetings with Dutch Parliamentarians.

“The provision of electricity cannot be seen as a luxury utility but as a basic need”, said Sagers.

According to Zagers, investments have been made in solar energy which has reduced Saba’s dependency on diesel generated electricity. “However, because of these same investments which need to be depreciated, the consumers are not seeing any relief”, said the Commissioner.

The Commissioner also indicated that currently the electricity law is being reviewed. he pointed out that the level of the subsidy provided to residents is not, which he qualified as a ‘wasted opportunity.

The generation of solar energy in Saba has turned out successful. Recently the Saba Electric Company was able to turn off the generator and supply the island solely from energy generated by the solar park. The success of the solar park has -contrary to popular expectation- not led to lower consumer prices.
