Kralendijk- On Monday, January 1, Island-Governor Edison Rijna received a visit from the Maskarada group at his residence in Playa Pariba. On January 1st at about 10 am the Maskarada group traditionally pays a visit to Island-Governor. This year the visit did not take place at the Government’s office, as is the case normally, but instead at the Governor’s private residence.
Rijna welcomed all those present and wished them all the best for the new year. He expressed the hope that 2018 would be a better year than 2017 for everyone and for our ‘dushi Boneiru’.
Govenor Rijna said that he was particularly pleased to see that so many young people have taken over the Maskarada tradition from the older generation. According to the Governor, this means that our culture is ‘alive and dynami’c.
The Dutch guests who came to see this element of local Bonairean culture also received a warm welcome from Governor Rijna. At the end of the performance, the Maskarada group received a present from Rijna as a token of appreciation for their performance.
