Inmates Prepare Sandwiches for Schoolchildren on Bonaire
KRALENDIJK – Since this week, 450 students from primary schools Strea Briante and Rayo di Solo receive a healthy breakfast every school day. This is made possible by a special project from the Judicial Institution Caribbean Netherlands (JICN), where inmates prepare sandwiches four times a week for the students.
On February 12, the first sandwiches were distributed by JICN director Wibo de Vries, together with school directors Remsley Nita (Strea Briante) and Jubella Balentin (Rayo di Solo). Project leader Karel Martis and foreman Giovanni Saragoza were also present.
The schools initiated the idea themselves because a good breakfast is important for children’s health, well-being, and academic performance. The Public Health Department of the Public Entity Bonaire supports the initiative.
Safety and hygiene are top priorities in this project. Only inmates who have been deemed suitable are allowed to participate. They work under the supervision of experienced foremen and follow strict food safety and transport regulations.
JICN is proud of this project. “We are not only helping the community but also providing inmates with a meaningful way to spend their time,” says director De Vries. “This way, we contribute to equal opportunities for children while also working on reintegration.”
