Bonaire Working on New Regulation for Alcohol and Tobacco Use

KRALENDIJK – The Public Entity Bonaire (PEB) is working on a new regulation to restrict the use of alcohol, tobacco, and smoking products. This follows a policy proposal recently presented to the Island Council, highlighting the health risks, particularly for young people. The new rules are expected to take effect no later than the second quarter of 2025.

One of the main concerns is the increasing alcohol and vape use among youth. The proposed measures include a ban on the sale of tobacco and e-cigarettes to individuals under 18 years old, restrictions on the sale of strong alcoholic beverages, and a prohibition on flavored vapes. Additionally, a smoking ban in all indoor workplaces has been proposed to reduce second-hand smoke exposure.

Outdated Legislation

Bonaire’s current regulations are outdated and lack provisions regarding age restrictions and e-cigarettes. Over the coming months, discussions will take place with stakeholders, including the hospitality industry, supermarkets, and law enforcement agencies. The Executive Council and Island Council are set to review the final regulation in the course of 2025.
