Rising Dengue Cases on Bonaire Raise Concern
KRALENDIJK – The number of dengue cases on Bonaire continues to rise, reports the Public Health Department. Since December 2024, both doctor visits and positive lab tests have increased.
The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) issued an international warning on February 10 due to the spread of dengue type 3 in the Caribbean and South America. Research shows that type 3 is now dominant on Bonaire, a shift from type 2 last year. PAHO warns that this variant could lead to more frequent and severe infections.
While most cases remain mild, several adults and children have been hospitalized in recent months. Health authorities emphasize the importance of early symptom recognition and preventive measures to curb the spread. With dengue transmission rising, residents are urged to protect themselves against mosquito bites and eliminate breeding grounds by removing standing water in and around homes.
Insecticides
Vector Control inspectors are actively combating dengue mosquitoes across the island by inspecting breeding sites and applying insecticides. Residents needing assistance with mosquito prevention can contact the Public Health Department at 715-5324.
