KRALENDIJK – Businesses wishing to place signs or other objects in public spaces will soon be required to apply for a permit and pay associated fees, according to the Public Entity Bonaire (PEB).

Although regulations have long stipulated that businesses must pay for the use of public spaces—such as sidewalks for terraces, advertising signs, or other purposes—the PEB will now actively enforce and collect these so-called “precario fees.”

Under the 2025 implementation agreement, the Directorate of Supervision and Enforcement (DRO), Legal Affairs, and the Caribbean Netherlands Police Force (KPCN) will collaborate to ensure compliance. Objects like chairs, tables, signs, planters, and rocks may not be placed on sidewalks or roadside areas without explicit approval. The PEB notes that the enforcement is not only about generating revenue, but also ensuring safety and fair treatment for all businesses.

Enforcement Timeline

Starting in February, the PEB will begin enforcement efforts. Until then, businesses will have the opportunity to remove unauthorized items or obtain the necessary permits. Non-compliance may result in fines or the removal of objects by authorities.
