Echo Hosts 20th Annual Lora Count on Bonaire – Volunteers Welcome
KRALENDIJK – Echo is organizing the annual Lora count on Saturday, January 25. Local volunteers are warmly invited to help count the Yellow-shouldered Amazon (Amazona barbadensis). This year is special, as it marks the 20th consecutive annual count and the 35th anniversary of the Lora counts on Bonaire.
The Lora counts have been taking place since 1980 to monitor the parrot population on Bonaire. Initially, the counts were not held every year, but since 2005, they have been conducted annually on the last Saturday of January.
Volunteers gather early in the morning at various lookout points before sunrise. Once the parrots leave their roosting sites, the counting begins and continues until all the birds have left. The counts are conducted simultaneously at all locations to ensure accuracy.
This year is especially significant as Echo is collaborating for the first time with the organization Provita on Isla Margarita, Venezuela. This partnership is crucial for the protection of the Yellow-shouldered Amazon, which faces similar challenges across different countries.
Presentation and Celebration
Tonight at 6:30 PM, there will be a special presentation about the 2025 Lora count. It will take place at the entrance of Washington-Slagbaai National Park.
After the count, everyone is invited to join the Nos Zjilea Cultural Market in Magazina di Rei from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. This year’s theme is “Nos Lora, Nos Orguyo” (Our Lora, Our Pride). There will be fun activities for children, engaging workshops, and an opportunity to learn more about the role of parrots in Bonaire’s ecosystem and culture.
There’s still time to volunteer! Sign up by emailing [email protected].
