Safety and Care at the Forefront: Protection Code Effective in the Caribbean Netherlands from 2025
KRALENDIJK – Starting January 1, 2025, a significant step will be taken toward creating a safer and more caring society on Bonaire, Sint Eustatius, and Saba. The new Decree on Social Support and Combating Domestic Violence and Child Abuse (HGKM) will provide better support for both residents and care professionals in preventing and addressing domestic violence and child abuse.
This decree will significantly improve social support on the islands. Residents who need extra assistance to remain independent at home will have better access to services such as assistive devices, household help, and day care. These improvements aim to ensure that people can live independently at home for as long as possible with the necessary support.
Additionally, a special advisory center will be established where both residents and professionals can report concerns or signals related to domestic violence and child abuse. A reporting right will be introduced for professionals, enabling them to report suspected cases under clear conditions. This advisory center will provide an accessible and responsive resource for addressing concerns quickly and carefully.
One of the most impactful changes is the introduction of the Protection Code. From 2025, organizations will be required to implement this code, which guides professionals in recognizing, discussing, and reporting suspicions of child abuse or domestic violence.
Five steps
The code consists of five clear steps to ensure professionals handle cases with care. For residents, this means that suspicions will first be discussed with them or their families before an official report is made. This approach seeks to strike a balance between thoroughness and prompt action.
