The Bottom, Saba- State Secretary Paul Blokhuis had quite some good news to share in a press conference he held during his visit to Saba. The island will receive 150.000 dollars for public health care issues, and an additional 120.000 euros for Youth Care. The State Secretary said he had understood that for Saba, working on prevention when it comes to youth, is a big priority for the island to which the Dutch Government happily contributes.

There was more good news however. The State Secretary told the media that he the Dutch Cabinet will make 1 million dollars available in the battle against smoking, alcohol abuse and obesity on the 3 public entities of Bonaire, St. Eustatius and Saba. “We will make 1 million dollars available to work on a Caribbean Prevention Program for the 3 public entities”, according to Blokhuis. The State Secretary said that prevention when it comes to smoking, alcohol and obesity were a ‘big issue’ in Holland, but that of course prevention was just as important on our islands.

The State Secretary also mentioned that he had taken notice of concerns in the communities about the fact that there was not enough attention for preventive health research and screening. “I can assure you that this has the Cabinet’s full attention and we are looking for ways to come to better screening facilities on the islands”, said Blokhuis.

The State Secretary during his press conference was joined by commissioner Roland Wilson from the Public Entity of Saba. Blokhuis said he had had good conversations with local government about a number of issues in his portfolio.

Wilson on his turn thanked the State Secretary for the extra funds made available. “Saba will be making good use of these additional funds. We will be putting a plan together on all areas concerned. I have my team in place already”, said a satisfied Wilson.
