Saba Faces Egg Shortage Amid Calls for Local Poultry Farm Investment
THE BOTTOM- The island of Saba is currently experiencing an egg shortage, a problem linked to international challenges such as the avian flu. Former Head of Economic Affairs, Dave Levenstone, highlights the severity of the issue.
Levenstone draws his conclusions a survey he conducted during his tenure. According to Levenstone, Saba previously consumed 750 dozen eggs per week—amounting to 9,000 eggs weekly.
Levenstone notes that efforts by small entrepreneurs to establish local egg farms have largely struggled due to a variety of reasons. Levenstone argues that the current shortage underscores the need for government investment in a sustainable poultry farm.
“Self-sufficiency means taking tangible steps to reduce the import bill,” Levenstone stated, emphasizing the long-term benefits of local egg production. While some might argue that previous attempts failed because they were side ventures, Levenstone believes a well-planned and government-supported poultry farm could succeed.
