SABA – Efforts by the NEPP (Nature and Environment Policy Plan) team and key stakeholders have led to significant progress in reducing erosion and restoring vegetation across the island. 

In areas like Giles Quarter, tree saplings are emerging and surviving, thanks to reduced overgrazing by free-roaming goats. These saplings, along with spreading grasses and shrubs on hillsides, are stabilizing soil, preventing landslides, and protecting marine ecosystems by reducing sediment runoff that harms coral reefs. 

To accelerate recovery, a reforestation program will begin planting trees in erosion-prone areas later this month.

Additionally, the Public Entity, with invasive species experts, is focusing on controlling goat populations and other non-native species to ensure the preservation of Saba’s biodiversity and further support habitat recovery.
