Bonaire Incinerator Taken Out of Service After Concerning Emission Values
KRALENDIJK – The Bonaire Island Government has initiated follow-up investigations into the effects of waste incineration and the fire at the landfill in Lagun, following concerning findings from previous measurements.
Studies conducted by Environmental Compliance Limited (ECL) and the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) revealed that emission standards for harmful substances were exceeded at the biomedical waste incinerator (AVI), potentially causing irritation to the respiratory system and eyes.
After the Lagun fire, elevated lead concentrations were found in soil samples, although no increased risk of dioxin exposure via the soil was detected. However, residents are still advised to avoid consuming leafy vegetables and animal products from within a 2 km radius of the site.
The incinerator has not only been temporarily shut down but will no longer be used, according to the Island Government.
Additional Research
In collaboration with the RIVM, further investigations are being conducted to identify pollution sources and mitigate future risks. The full reports are available on the website of the Public Entity Bonaire.
