Collection of Fines for Illegal Stay at Bonaire Airport Raises Questions
KRALENDIJK – Migrants and refugees who overstay their permitted time on Bonaire are issued a fine when departing via the airport.
The fine also applies to European Dutch citizens and residents of other Antillean islands who overstay their legal limit. Additionally, migrants often receive a two-year entry ban. The Fundashon Union di Imigrantenan Boneriano (FUIB) has reported receiving complaints that the Marechaussee at the airport sometimes pressures migrants to pay the fine immediately. According to FUIB, this practice may constitute unlawful behavior.
FUIB has sent a letter to the Rijksvertegenwoordiger, the Marechaussee, and the Public Prosecutor’s Office to address the issue. The organization emphasizes that many migrants come to Bonaire out of financial necessity due to dire conditions in their home countries, such as Venezuela.
