Executive Council and Island Council Meet with UNESCO, KIEN, and NatCom NL
KRALENDIJK – Late last week, an exchange took place between UNESCO, the Knowledge Centre for Intangible Heritage Netherlands (KIEN), the Dutch UNESCO Commission (NatCom NL), and local UNESCO representatives with the Island Council and the Executive Council of Bonaire.
The purpose of the meeting was to introduce the Island Council and Executive Council to UNESCO and to share information about the roles and responsibilities of the participating organizations.
During the meeting, special attention was given to Bonaire’s changed status after 10-10-10 and the implementation of projects led by KIEN and NatCom NL. Each organization provided an introduction, followed by a valuable exchange of ideas between the visitors, members of the Island Council, the Executive Council, and the council registry.
Additionally, discussions were held on how UNESCO’s objectives could be better realized within Bonaire’s current governance structure. It was also reiterated that the oldest tree in the Kingdom of the Netherlands is located on Bonaire and is over 1,000 years old, further emphasizing Bonaire’s strong commitment to nature conservation and cultural heritage.
Cultural Heritage
This exchange is essential for informing the Island Council about key societal topics. Through these meetings, council members stay updated on relevant developments and can make informed decisions that contribute to Bonaire’s future, with a focus on both cultural heritage and sustainable development.
