Most Important Safety Hazards at Bonaire Landfill Resolved for Now
KRALENDIJK – According to a press release from the Rijksdienst Caribisch Nederland (RCN), the most urgent safety and storage issues at the Selibon landfill have been addressed. Damaged containers holding asbestos waste have been repaired and are now securely sealed.
New asbestos waste is being temporarily stored in new containers while awaiting a long-term solution. Temporary measures have also been implemented for biomedical waste, with the introduction of refrigerated containers.
Kingdom Representative Jan Helmond, who recently assumed responsibility for parts of waste management, stated that as of January 1, slaughter waste is being buried under strict guidelines, as the incinerator remains out of service.
Additionally, security at the landfill has been tightened with 24/7 surveillance, CCTV monitoring, and an improved perimeter fence.
Permit Process
The investigation into long-term solutions and permit issuance is ongoing. Helmond has assured that a reputable engineering firm will review the permit application, which dates to 2022.
