MPB-Motion Calling for Ban on Single-use Plastic Unanimously Approved
Kralendijk- The MPB party has presented a motion in the Island Council on October 30th which calls for the ban of single-use plastics on the island.
According to the motion, everybody knows that plastic is becoming a worldwide problem, polluting the land as well as the oceans. Another problem is that plastic takes a very long time to degrade by itself.
The motion also refers to the fact that for Bonaire, as Eco-destination, plastic is even more of an enemy, because it can affect the coral in the Marine Park, one of Bonaire’s biggest sources of income.
The motion presented to the island council called on the Executive Council to put a process in motion which will lead to a complete bank of single-use plastics, including Styrofoam boxes, plastic straws and disposable bags per January 1, 2020.
Unanimous decision
All parties present in the Island Council voted in favor of the motion, thereby making the ban a reality in little over more than 1 year from now.
It is not the first time the MPB has championed against pollution on the island, but this time the efforts have led to concrete action and a concrete decision, further strengthening the efforts to become not only the first, but certainly the World’s leading “blue destination”.
