Saba Government to Restore Traditional Saban Cottage in Windwardside
The historic Hyacinth House, a traditional Saban cottage in the heart of Windwardside, is slated for restoration in the first half of 2025. Owned by the Public Entity Saba, the cottage has been preserved as a reminder of the island’s cultural heritage, even as modern developments like the adjacent car park have emerged.
The restoration project aims to address the building’s urgent need for maintenance while carefully preserving its historical charm. Planned work includes replacing the roof and windows, repairing shutters and shingles, repainting, and adding traditional features such as porches and Saban “Gingerbread” roof details. Modern upgrades, including a new electrical system, air conditioning, insulation, and interior adaptations for office use, will make the building more functional and sustainable.
Once restored, Hyacinth House will provide additional office space for the Public Entity Saba, helping alleviate the current shortage while ensuring the continued use of this cultural landmark. A public tender for contractors will be announced in the coming weeks.

The Public Entity Saba says to be committed to preserving the island’s heritage while enhancing the functionality of its historic buildings, ensuring Hyacinth House remains a vibrant part of Windwardside’s legacy.
