STENAPA Celebrates Iguana Day on April 28th
Oranjestad- On Saturday, April 28, Sint Eustatius National Parks Foundation (STENAPA) will put the native Lesser Antillean Iguana in the spotlight during Iguana Day. Iguana Day is a regional Caribbean initiative in collaboration with nature organisations in Anguilla and St.Barths. Also Blijdorp Zoo in Rotterdam takes part in this event.
The day takes place in and around the STENAPA office and is packed with activities from 10 am – 3.30 pm, such as presentations (10 am and 1 pm), iguana patrol in the field (10.45 am and 2 pm), kids corner with drawing and painting, demonstrations of how to measure and tag iguanas, and an info booth. Snacks and drinks are available at discounted rates. At 12.30 STENAPA will announce the winner of the school drawing competition. Kids can submit their iguana drawing to their school or bring it to the STENAPA office ultimately Thursday 26 April. In the afternoon STENAPA will reveal traffic signs to warn for crossing iguanas.
In the build up to the event an island wide game called ‘Find the invasive iguana’ will take place. STENAPA will hide an invasive iguana with black bands on the tail and it is up to the community to find it. Hints about the location will be given on the STENAPA FB-page.
If you want to sign up ahead to take part in an iguana patrol, please come to the office and sign in. When the patrols are fully booked, STENAPA wil organize more patrols in the days after the event. The maximum group size is 8 persons.
