KRALENDIJK – The number of dengue cases on Bonaire has increased in recent weeks, with 24 infections reported since the start of the year. Recent rainfall has contributed to the growth of the dengue mosquito population, the Aedes aegypti, which transmits the virus.

Dengue usually causes mild symptoms, but in severe cases, it can lead to hospitalization. On Bonaire, in addition to type 2, cases of type 3 have now also been identified. People who have had dengue are only protected against the specific type they previously contracted.

The Department of Public Health advises residents to take preventive measures, such as wearing light, covering clothing, using mosquito repellents with at least 30% DEET, and sleeping under a mosquito net. It is also recommended to eliminate standing water in and around the house, as it serves as a breeding ground for mosquitoes.

Treating Breeding Grounds

Inspectors are actively monitoring for mosquito breeding sites, treating them with insecticides, and providing information on preventive actions residents can take to reduce the spread of dengue.
