Kralendijk – The Police Force Caribbean Netherlands (KPCN) yesterday, during a big traffic check at the ‘Surnan di Roosendal’ roundabout, handed out no less than 91 fines.

According to the KPCN spokesperson, the vast majority of the fines were given out for the lack of using indicator lights. Many motorists seem to have difficulty using the roundabouts on the island in the correct way.

The traffic check also led to the arrest of two 28-year-old men who were found to be staying on the island illegally. According to Police, a few other minor offenses were also found, such as not having a driver’s license or insurance papers.

The contols did not go altogether smoothly. According to the police spokesperson, some motorists showed aggressive behavior towards the officers conducting the controls, while a few other drivers even tried to drive away from Police, hoping to escape control and, potentially, a fine.

KPCN says that aggressive behavior towards officers performing their normal duty will not be tolerated. In addition to the fine, drivers who display aggression, can also face prosecution.

Although the police did not state how many vehicles were checked in total, the number of fines issued seems quite large.
