Government Listens and Simplifies Process to Receive New License Plates

Kralendijk – The Executive Council of the Public Entity Bonaire (OLB) seems to have taken criticism on the process for collecting new number plates serious.

In a press statement sent out today, it was announced which documents must be submitted in order to receive the new plates. The submission of proof that the taxes for the years 2017 and 2018 were paid, is no longer part of the requirements. The requirement to show proof of address also seems to have been dropped.

The communication sent out today lists the requirements which mus now be met. A valid proof of identity must be submitted when collecting the new plates. That can be a sedula, passport or driver’s license. If the vehicle is registered in a company name, an extract from the Chamber of Commerce will also be needed.

In addition, vehicle owners must be able to prove that the road tax for at least the first half of the year 2019 was paid. A proof of payment must also be submitted for the costs for the new number plates. Last but not least, proof of a valid insurance is also required.

The new plates can be paid in different ways: a payment can be made at the bank of choise. For MCB this is account 40291708, for RBC 8400000180872997, ORCO BANK 7601000195 or Banco di Caribe 30638802. Transfer via online banking is also possible. The payment reference for the motor vehicle tax assessment 2019 must be submitted as a description both in the case of payment at the bank and via online banking. The cost for the new plates is $8.40 for cars and $5.60 for scooters and motorcycles.

A bit curious is the fact that Government in today’s press statement writes that it was never the intention to have tax payers show proof of payment for 2017 and 2018, while this was indeed explicitly stated in earlier communication.
