Bonaire – The Open World Championship Sunfish is on the third day of competition and the 65 top sailors competed again. After nine races, a clear leading group emerges, in which various nationalities are represented.

David Hernández from Guatemala manages to maintain his highest position with a third and thirteenth place. With only two points difference, he is followed by Peruvian Renzo Sanguineti. His compatriot Jean-Paul de Trazegnies, who won the Open Worlds 2018, has improved his position and occupies fifth place behind the American Eugene Schmitt, who led the list after the first racing day. In between, the Curacao-born Eugène Hendrikx shines in third place, a wonderful achievement amid the world top. Tijn van der Gulik also managed to stay in the top 15, as did his father Hans van der Gulik and Darius Berenos , all from Curacao, even though Tijn sails under the Aruban flag because of his pursuit of participation in the Olympic Games. Sipke Stapert is the best performing Bonairean, followed by organizer Ton Nuijten.

Traditionally, the winners of the finished sailed races on the eve of the “lay day” will be honored during a joint BBQ. Hernández received a trophy for winning the first and third race from the deputy of Finance and Economic Affairs Elvis Tjin Asjoe. His countryman Diego Silvestre took the honors in the second race. The American Eugene Schmitt was also the first to cross the finish line twice, at the end of the fourth and eighth race, while the Colombian Simon Gomez Ortiz won the fifth Race. After winning the sixth race, the Curacao Derek Bongaertz was enthusiastically welcomed by his team mates and the Peruvians Alonso Collantes and Renzo Sanguineti closed the row.

Today the sailors can recover before they enter the final and decisive three races on Friday. In the afternoon buses are ready to let the international sailors get acquainted with another tourist asset of Bonaire: the water sports center in Sorobon where Jib City provides kayaks and windsurf and SUP boards free of charge.
