New ramp Big Step Forward for Less Mobile Passengers
Kralendijk- Wheelchair Passengers at Flamingo Airport in Bonaire can finally board or deplane in a more humane way, thanks to the purchase by the airport of a movable ramp for wheelchairs.
Until now, passengers who were not mobile (enough) had to be hoisted on or off board by ground staff in a special seat, a situation that was far from ideal for the passengers involved.
Former commissioner Nina den Heyer of the MPB-party pushed hard for the purchase of the specialized ground equipment. The association for people with disabilities on Bonaire (MIVABO), had long insisted on the purchase of the special equipment.
Last week, the special ramp was deployed for the first time by groundhandler Air Handing Services Bonaire (AHSB) on the arrival of a Delta Airlines flight from Atlanta.
