Kralendijk- Property Tax (Vastgoedbelasting) as of January 1, 2018, will no longer be levied on social/sport organizations. This could be understood from Commissioner Joselito Statia, during a press conference held in Kralendijk yesterday morning.

According to Statia, the abolishment of property tax for social organzations is one of the concrete recommendations of the so called ‘committee Spies’. Many social organizations had been confronted with an assessment and subsequent bills for property tax, while there were no reserves to pay the corresponding amounts, and these organizations never knew a similar tax back in the days of the Netherlands Antilles.

According to Statia, the tariff for social organizations will now be brought to zero. Even more important, a solution will also be sought for the same organizations going back to the year 2010, when property tax was introduced. “I can confirm that in conversations with The Hague it has been confirmed that a solution will be sought for these organizations which in many cases have accumulated a debt over the years, simply because they did not have the funds to pay”, said Statia.

The reduction to zero, which is in practice an abolishment of the tax in question is, without doubt, very good news for Bonaire, St. Eustatius and Saba.
