The Bottom, SABA – Saba has again won two awards as a green, sustainable destination that caters towards eco-tourism. Commissioner of Tourism Bruce Zagers received the awards in the Netherlands last week.

It concerns the Green Destination Global Top 100 Award of Green Destinations, an initiative organized by ten leading sustainable tourism organizations and networks, and the Silver QualityCoast Award. Saba was awarded a spot in the 2018 Sustainable Destinations Global Top 100 “in recognition of its efforts towards responsible tourism and distinctive appeal.” Saba was also in the Top 100 in 2017.

The Silver QualityCoast Award was given to Saba “to certify its attractiveness, quality and efforts for sustainability.” For the next two years, Saba may fly the QualityCoast flag and banner as a confirmation that it is a certified green destination that cares for its nature, above and under water. Saba has won QualityCoast awards before.

QualityCoast is a program of the Coastal & Marine Union EUCC of the European union that aims to establish a worldwide network of coastal communities that share similar values on sustainable development, nature and biodiversity, cultural heritage and identity, and social responsibility, while at the same time maintaining high standards in the quality of their tourism. QualityCoast is one of the organizations of the Green Destinations initiative.

Commissioner Zagers was elated to receive another two awards. “This shows that Saba’s efforts to be a green, eco-tourism destination are paying off. It is good that our work is noticed and appreciated abroad,” he said. Zagers received the awards from Ronald Vermeeren of the Netherlands Enterprise Agency RVO.
