Kralendijk- The Government of Bonaire today has launched a website with details and explanations regarding the newly implemented Traffic Ordinance.

In the first instance, the authorities give priority to five components that will come into effect on 1 August 2019 and which will also be checked from that date. This concerns articles in the law such as wearing seat belts, prohibition of mobile use behind the wheel, prohibition to drive under the influence of alcohol, child seats and the obligation to wear a helmet when riding scooters, motorbikes and quads.

A transition period has also been introduced from 1 August 2019 up to and including 1 October 2019. During the transition period no fines will be issued and no fines will be imposed, but checks will be made whereby warnings will be given regarding these five rules.

It is clear that this law contains more articles that will gradually come into effect. The points mentioned, however, are the most important ones that will be checked.

To come back to the website, it is made in four languages: Papiamentu, Dutch, Spanish and English.

The website is accessible on www.verkeerswetbonaire.org with a language that is easy to understand and easy to use.
