Statia attends Kingdom Tournament in Bonaire

A delegation from St. Eustatius attended the Kingdom Tournament in Bonaire during the past week. The Tournament comprised representation of the Public Entity of Saba, Sports United Federation Saba, the Public Entity of St. Eustatius, St. Eustatius Sports Facility Foundation and A+ Academic & Professional Training Centre, also of St. Eustatius.

The Kingdom Tournament is the conclusion of a special developed youth programme ‘Alleen Jij Bepaalt Wie Je Bent’, also known as ‘You Are Your Own Icon’ as currently run on St. Maarten. It focuses on the personal development of youths between the ages of 12-15 years through team sports.

Basketball, baseball and soccer were played simultaneously at different sports locations on Bonaire. Teams from Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao, St. Maarten and the Netherlands enjoyed their love for sports, celebrated own personal achievements and Bonaire as the host island. Besides the tournament there were also social and cultural activities. It was a beautiful week bringing the youth together from all over the Dutch Kingdom.

“The main goal for the Statia delegation attending this tournament was to gain a better understanding of this youth programme and bring it to the Island. With the knowledge obtained Statia can now do so. Youth and Sports are important focus areas for us. This programme is only a part of an overall plan to boost our efforts as also identified in the recently signed Sports- and Prevention agreement”, explained Director of the Directorate of Social Affairs, Carol Jack-Roosberg.
