Kralendijk- Statia will be serving as a mini-hub for a new initiative from the Ministries of the Interior and Kingdom Relations, Infrastructure and Water Management and the Rijksdienst Caribisch Nederland (RCN) to set up a temporary air connection between Bonaire, St. Eustatius and Saba. The new service will be executed by Winair and is planned to start in January 2018.

Under the plan direct flights will take place between Bonaire and Statia. In Statia, passengers for Saba will connect on to a flight from Winair to Saba and vice versa. Initially there will be a frequency of 4 flight per week.

According to a press release from RCN, after the hurricanes Irma and Maria, an urgent need arose on Saba and St. Eustatius for an extra access for optimizing work traffic, the tourist sector and medical referrals. According to RCN the new service will mean an impulse for the tourist sector of Saba and St. Eustatius and give the local economy a stimulus, but at the sammee time is important for RCN and the ministries working on the islands, also from the point of view of cost control.

Details as to the equipment to be used for the service are yet unknown.
