Two Suspects Saba Convicted for Soft Drugs Posession

The Bottom, Saba- Two men were on trial yesterday, Tuesday August 13, 2019 on Saba for possession of soft drugs.

Both suspects have previously been convicted for possession of drugs. Pursuant to the Law of Opium 1960 BES, possession of marijuana is punishable regardless of the purpose for which it is used. Drug use by young people on Saba is often accompanied by unrest and other criminal offenses. In the Justice Triangle (consultation between Governor, Public Prosecutor’s Office and police) agreements have been made to reduce usage and address possession. As a result the Public Prosecutor’s Office is referring Saba drug cases with relatively small amounts to the Judge.

Both men were convicted by the Court; a fine of US$ 300 was issued to one of the suspects and a conditional prison sentence of 10 days and the other a prison sentence of 60 days with deduction of the time spent in pretrial detention.
