Kralendijk- According to information received from the Government of Bonaire, work on the South pier is steadily progressing. The work is entering a new phase, now that a special barge will be driving piles into the sea bottom, using a vibration technique.

“The piles will be driven into the sea ground by means of a vibration technique. This causes less noise compared to other forms of placing piles”, according to the release from Government. Should the vibration technique however not do the trick, the piles will still have to be driven into the ground by means of more old fashioned pneumatic technique. According to Government, this will produce more noise.

A special barge to place the piles has in the meantime been brought into position. Government expects preparatory work will take another day, before the placement of the piles can start. Urgent repairs became necessary as the pier’s structure had been weakened over the years, mainly because of episodes with bad weather.
